Easter in Húsavík: Whale watching, music festival and more!
It’s great fun to be in Húsavík, the whale watching capital for Easter, with many concerts and events happening in town and more whale watching tours on the schedule. It will also be hard to miss the mountains of chocolate in the stores, with Easter eggs (páskaegg) taking on a main role!
Is Easter a good time to see whales in Iceland?
Last year during the same week as Easter this year, we had incredible sightings on our whale watching tours in Húsavík! We encountered 7 different species roaming in Skjálfandi Bay, including the elusive Blue whale, the graceful Fin whale, playful White-beaked dolphins, majestic Orcas, massive Sperm whales, adorable Harbour porpoises, and the beloved Minke whale. While we can’t guarantee the same encounters, whale watching from Húsavík over Easter looks promising, and we are excited to sail out three times a day at 9:30, 11:00, and 13:30.
List of happenings in Húsavík
This year Húsavík has a lot to offer during Easter. Here is a short list of the main events happening in and around the town.
HnoðRi – Húsavík Music Festival
The new Húsavík Easter Music Festival debuts on Saturday, March 30. It’s all about having fun and listening to young and upcoming musicians and bands from the North of Iceland. Entry is free!
Buchgangan – Húsavík cross country ski race
You may not have had any idea, but there is a great ski area just a 5-minute drive from Húsavík, with a small ski lift and cross-country skiing tracks. And yes, there is a cross-country race over Easter on March 30th that you can join! The ski race is named after Nikulás Buch, honouring the very first skiing school in the world established by him in the year 1777 in Húsavík!
Live music at Geosea Baths
How about more live music this time while you soak in the geothermal waters of Geosea with a fantastic view over Skjálfandi Bay? Kick off Easter on Wednesday 27th when the all-female Icelandic pop band FLOTT plays live at the Geosea Baths.
Recommended food and drinks in Húsavík
Between whale watching tours, cross-country skiing, and music events, make sure to save time for some rewarding refreshments. We recommend the restaurant Gamli Baukur down by Húsavík harbour for excellent food inside the drift-wood-built cosy houses. For drinks, make sure to visit the taproom of Húsavík öl, one of Iceland’s best microbreweries.
Húsavík is an ideal Easter getaway!
Action, culture, relaxation – Húsavík has something for everyone. Whether you’re seeking wildlife adventures on our preserved wooden oak boats, visiting cultural events and museums around town, or joining Icelandic bathing culture in the geothermal baths nested on the cliffs, you’re sure to find the perfect escape for a wonderful Icelandic Easter.
