Amazing whale watching season in Húsavík, The Whale Watching Capital of Iceland
Húsavík has proven to be a must-visit destination for all nature lovers, with consistently great whale watching conditions throughout the entire 2023 season!
We have seen smiles on the faces of our passengers, as well as on our caring crew the whole time, and this signifies one thing: we’ve had another memorable whale watching season that will go down in the books! Here is the wrap-up.
Superb Spring days with many different species
The 1st of March is traditionally the first day of whale watching in Húsavík, and this season was off to a fantastic start with sightings of some of the ocean’s most beautiful creatures within the first weeks. Among them were the elusive Blue whale, the graceful Fin whale, playful White-beaked dolphins, majestic Orcas, massive Sperm whales, beloved Minke whales and adorable Harbour porpoises. From the beginning of April, we also started seeing Humpback whales daily in Skjálfandi Bay!
Summer of many Blue whales
In fact, the first day of summer in Iceland is traditionally celebrated on the first Thursday after April 18th. This day marks the beginning of brighter days and better conditions for whale watching, as more humpback whales roam in Skjálfandi Bay. The summer months are the best for whale watching in Húsavík, and upon reviewing our logbooks from the season, we found out about a notable statistic from this summer. Over 100 tours encountered Blue whales this year! There is truly no other place like this in Iceland and what an absolute joy of spotting these majestic creatures throughout the summer!
Grand Autumn finale with Humpback whales
Autumn in Húsavík is a lovely time when nature changes its coat, and we witness the first snow on peaks around Skjálfandi Bay, with humpback whales resurfacing all around. This year we were fortunate to encounter humpback whales every day throughout the autumn months! We saw many blows all around the Bay daily, with many tours encountering even more than 10 humpback whales!
Winter preparations
The end of the whale watching season was a great farewell to the ocean’s giants until the next season begins. However, it’s a busy time for us in Húsavík. Preparations for the new season are in full swing at the office, and the same goes for our shipyard team which has their hands full with maintenance of our 11 traditional wooden boats.
Join us next season
What a fabulous season we had! As we’re looking into our logbooks, whales were spotted in approximately 97.6% of our whale watching tours from Húsavík this year. Thank you for being a part of our incredible journey in 2023.
