Breaching humpback whales – what a sight!
Humpback whales are the stars of the show in Skjalfandi Bay Husavik. Seen on almost all tours, this baleen whale can weight around 30 tons but is still very playful and great fun to watch. Its surface behaviour attracts attention and no wonder passengers hold their breathe when this huge whale lifts its fluke, slaps its tails or even jumps out of the ocean!
Husavik – the home of the blue whale
The blue whale, the largest animal on the planet, has become a regular visitor in Skjalfandi Bay Husavik. This summer the blue whale has been seen during several whale watching tours and it seems to like hanging out in Skjalfandi Bay. It is spectacular to see and get close to this enormous marine mammal – surely a once in a lifetime moment.
Killer whales and a very rare hybrid whale in the bay!
It is always a pleasure to have rare visitors in the bay. Early this summer groups of killer whales where seen in the bay and then a few weeks later we had a visit from a rare hybrid-whale. This hybrid of a blue whale and a fin whale has been seen in Skjalfandi Bay Husavik in the last summers and our crew was extra happy to welcome it once again to the arctic waters of Husavik. Not to mention the super lucky passengers that witnessed this very rare occasion in the wild nature of Skjalfandi Bay.
