Being a sociable bird, puffins usually breeds in large colonies. Similarly, the puffin population in Húsavík is no different. In a puffin colony located 20-minutes from Húsavík, more than 200,000 puffins can be found! Unsurprisingly, this colony has been coined the “Puffin island”.
The puffins usually return to the same colony at which they were hatched, meaning that we see the same birds year after year.
Although puffins can be found in small numbers at sea while whale watching, most of them stay close to the island. For those reasons, you have to do a special Whale Watching & Puffin tour to be able to see them properly!
