Whale watching has been one of the top attractions in Iceland for years, and the huge numbers of whales are the biggest reason why travelers choose to visit Húsavík. It is the whale watching capital of Iceland after all!
Even in December, the whale spotting has never been this successful. There are now more humpback whales in Húsavík than ever before!
You should definitely visit Iceland during the winter!
Whale Watching Iceland Par Excellence!
Although most whale watching trips take place during the high season, which is from the beginning of May until the late September. However, there are whales in Húsavík almost all year long. Winter whale watching is no less charming than the summer whale watching, despite the lack of puffins.
In the winter wonderland that Iceland becomes once it begins snowing, our trips transform into a nature excursion. Not only are your eyes focused on the ocean where you have a great chance of spotting humpback whales, and even minke whales and harbour purpoises, but also is there less travelers on board so you’ve got plenty of space, there’s snow in the mountains, and our renowned delicious hot chocolate tastes so much better when it’s colder outside!
Whale Watching in December Has Never Been So Successful!
We are the only tour operator in Húsavík that offers whale watching trips in December.
There are still plenty of humpback whales in Húsavík, even though it’s the middle of December. Not only do we have the numbers in our favour, these humpback whales are also super friendly and playful!
Although the wildlife is unpredictable, some humpback whales curiously approach our boat while most have already gotten familiar with our code of conduct. They therefore now know we allow them to approach us on their terms, in order to minimise disturbance. The whales repay the kindness by becoming the stars of the show!
See the Humpback Whales!
As you can see in the following video, the whales in Húsavík are full of affection towards our crew and passengers.
This video was captured by our guide Garðar Þröstur Einarsson in one of the last tours of the season. Not only is our crew highly qualified in regards to responsible conduct with whales and wildlife, but they are also great filmmakers!
