Sustainable Whale Watching!
The Icelandic Environmental Association awarded North Sailing the Blue Flag, for our sustainable whale watching. This acknowledgment represents a serious and profound commitment to both people and the environment. The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label, awarded to sustainable tour operators that make a special effort to protect the environment.
It’s a great honour receiving the Blue Flag label, as it’s a confirmation of the work we put in every day to protect our surroundings and the respect we have for the environment. We’re the only whale watching operator in Iceland that offers carbon-neutral options on electric boats. Hence, the tour, which is on an electric boat, is both silent and comfortable. As a result, it’s sustainable whale watching at its best!
Responsible Whale Watching
One of the most popular attractions in Iceland is whale watching. Húsavík, the whale watching capital of Iceland, is not only visited by thousands of tourists every year, but also hundreds of whales. Whether it’s the humpback whale, minke whale, blue whale, or white-beaked dolphin, we feel obligated to conduct responsible whale watching. That includes responsibility and sustainability towards cetaceans and the marine environment.
Furthermore, our fleet is made up of traditional wooden fishing boats. The boats have been carefully restored and adapted to a new role without compromising their original character. Therefore, by preserving the boats we are saving them.
Code of Conduct
We abide a code of conduct where we approach the wildlife on their terms, in order to cause minimum disturbance to them and the environment. Whether it’s the whales, birds or other animals, we prioritise the well-being of the wildlife in Húsavík above our sightings.
Húsavík Whale Watching Options

To conclude, Húsavík is a wonderful town in the scenic North Iceland. Not only plenty of fish in the sea but plenty of whales as well! Most noteworthy, the whales are in the bay almost all year round now in numbers rarely seen before, as our late November whale watching tour exemplifies!
