Humpback whales in Skjálfandi Bay
The whale watching summer is off to a great start. When it comes to watching humpback whales, the last few days have been especially successful. The humpbacks have been the most common whales in the bay in recent years and this year seems to be no different. Being called Angels of the Sea because of their large white flippers, the humpback whales can be extremely playful and fun to watch; often raising the fluke before diving, rolling over and occasionally breaching.
However, the humpback whales are not the only whales in the bay. We have spotted Minke whales, White-beaked dolphins and Harbour porpoises regularly on our tours. Also, Killer whales (Orcas) and Blue whales tend to show up in the bay on slightly more irregular basis.
We certainly hope that these whales will stay with us for long, as they have done in previous years.
