Three species
Today was just another nice day for whale watching here in Skjálfandi Bay and it showed us once more that you never know what to expect when you go out at sea looking for whales.
During the morning tour we encountered a very nice humpback whale which was feeding close to the surface not too far from Húsavík harbour. We got some really good looks at the whale and after a while, we decided to try our luck a bit further west, closer to the mountains.
But since we did not see any more whales there, we decided to cross the bay again and all of a sudden a minke whale showed up! We got some really nice and close-up looks at the minke whale before continuing our journey back towards Húsavík.
In the afternoon we encountered once more our friend, the hungry humpback whale which was still busy feeding close to Húsavík. Again we got some really nice looks at the humpback and the whale even came up with the mouth wide open a few times!
This time we decided to try our luck a bit further north and after some searching we came across a very nice pod of white-beaked dolphins! There were probably around 15-20 individuals in this group and they really seemed to like our boat, they were following us for quite a while.
It was really nice to see two species again (minke whale and white-beaked dolphin) that we had not seen here in the bay for quite a few days now. Who knows what tomorrow will have on offer for us ;-).
