A Big Surprise: Blue Whale!
After a few days of stormy weather, we headed out into Skálfandi Bay, unsure what to expect. Waters were surprisingly calm, and it seemed hard to believe that just some hours ago massive waves would have rocked even the sturdiest of our boats. What would be hiding in the waters of the Bay after these last few days was a complete mystery to us, though we were looking forward to finding out. Our first encounter was with a Humpback whale, which gave us some fantastic looks at its fluke as it went down for the deep dives. Surfacing often, our passengers got some excellent pictures of the whale, and we could even see its characteristically bumpy face and blowholes clearly.
The Bay still held some secrets, though a very massive blow in the distance revealed what they might be. We set course towards this towering blow, and as we suspected we found a Blue Whale! Blue whales are particularly uncommon in the fall season, and after days without visiting the Bay, we were very pleasantly surprised to see it! Many people visit Húsavík with the dream of seeing the biggest animal on earth, and those in the Bay today were lucky enough to fulfill this dream. Blue whales are truly mysterious creatures, and seeing them in the water is a really wonderful experience.
