the Humpback party continues…..
We have had two amazing whale watching tours on our biggest vessel “Garðar” today:
In the morning we set the course in the direction of the mountains in the western part of the bay, where most of the whales had been seen the last couple of days.
But in the middle of the bay we came across a group of at least 7 humpback whales that were constantly surfacing together – a really spectacular sight, especially as these large whales are not often seen in groups!
In the afternoon the group of humpback whales seemed to have split up and we sailed across the bay towards the mountains, where we ran into a big feeding frenzy with at least four humpback whales, two minke whales and thousands of seabirds.
The humpbacks were feeding with their mouth wide open, allowing us to see their baleen plates, and at one point, one of the humpback whales started breaching out of the water! And just a few seconds later, another humpback (on the other side of our boat) started breaching!
We counted at least seven jumps until the whales stopped breaching and calmed down again.
A bit later it was time for us to start heading back to Húsavík again with a boat full of smiling passengers.
