Shy humpbacks and flat seas
The day started out with promising weather, low wind, flat seas but lots of swell, and very good clarity! After the usual run to Lundey (full of the always adorable puffins) we heard news of a humpback whale in the area. Surrounded at first by four boats, this one whale was a little bit shy, or very busy eating, making only short blows and hardly ever fluking. The other boats moved on, and then this shy one gave us a better view, showing us a bit of his bumpy face and an occasional fluke. But alas, we had to move on. On our way back to harbor, a minke whale made a very brief appearance, but didn’t stick around long enough for us to really enjoy its presence.
The second tour of the day brought us to the same humpback whale as the morning, though it was nowhere to be seen! After getting news of one near Saltvik we set course and made it in record time, with a brief encounter with a harbor porpoise. This new humpback gave us a great show, showing off its fluke and coming near the boat on several occasions, there are definitely different personalities in this species! The wind increased on our way back, and putting one sail up helped on our way back to port.
