Breaching humpback whale!!!!!
Today we got reminded of the changing weather conditions here in Iceland. The day started with warm temperatures and a calm sea. We set the course into the area where we spotted the whales yesterday in the evening. And we were lucky: One of the humpback whales was still there! He was very relaxed and we could observe the whole animal floating very close to the sea surface. A second humpback whale came up a bit further west and we got also some very close encounters with this individual.
However, in the afternoon the wind suddenly picked up. The sea got choppy and it was a bit difficult to spot the whales between the white caps of the waves. We found one of the humpback whales from the morning again, but he was heading north in very high speed and it was difficult to follow him. But suddenly we saw some mighty splashes a bit further east: A breaching humpback whale!!! We headed there and luckily the humpback whale continued breaching when we arrived. He turned on his back, waving with the long, white flippers and then he started lobtailing, slapping with the tailfluke at the sea surface. Once again we got the proof: Nature is always exciting and you never know what to expect when sailing out into Skjálfandi Bay!
