A bay full of humpbacks and dolphins
Whale Watching continues to be really successful these days here in Skjálfandi Bay and today was no exception:
Just a few minutes after we had left the harbour this morning, we already spotted two humpback whales that were swimming together and surfaced several times right next to our boat. We were still pretty close to the harbour, so after a little while we decided to leave the humpbacks and keep on searching.
It did not take long until we saw a humpback whale breaching out of the water in the distance, but as we went there, the whale stopped jumping. But all of a sudden some white-beaked dolphins surfaced close to us a bit further towards the north we could also see a very large blow: A BLUE WHALE!!!
We sailed towards the blue whale and got some really close looks at the biggest animal on earth and even though these animals are a regular sight here in Skjálfandi Bay during the early summer, it is also for us always a special sight to see a blue whale close to the boat!
As we left the blue whale, we even found three more humpback whales on the way back to Húsavík.
In the afternoon the blue whale had left the bay, but we spotted at least five humpback whales and the bay was simply full of dolphins, that performed all kinds of jumps and gave us a great show.
