Playing with the giants
As we say during the tours, the bay is full of life these days; and yesterday was not an exception. Marina, Starri,Hilmar, Runar, Hrólfur and me sailed with big groups of passengers on Gardar expecting the best for the day.
And we found some really good sights. We were still close to Húsavík when we had the first encounter; a Humpback whale came to us and we could see quite well her fluke and all the body shape. After that we headed further north because we had already seen some massive spouts. There was a Blue whale, and the captain managed to get some good sights of her.
During the second tour we were even luckier! We saw the same species, Humpack whales and Blue whales but closer than during the morning. We had the chance to observe these fascinating animals several times.
But the most surprising encounter was reserved for the last tour of the day. Two Blue Whales together beside Gardar and a jumping Humpback Whale!!!! What a great day! We were sailing towards the area where knew we could find the whales and suddenly, two big Blue whales showed up close to the boat; it is so strange to see this kind of animals together that we were really excited. Even more, we could see some more spouts in the area, and suddenly, in the distance, someone started to jump. Passengers and us, all of us were so excited that we didn’t know in which direction we should look.
We spent some time with the blue whale and then the captain decided to head towards the jumping humpback whale; what a show! We could have been there for hours looking at this animal, so magic the moment was. Having a giant jumping, breaching, showing the head and fluking just a few meters from you is shocking; the noise of her blows and the noise falling into the water is something you cannot describe, it is something magic, something to experience at least once in your life.
Definitely, this is not something you can see every day.
