No summer – but great whales!
The summer still doesn’t want to come to Iceland. Today it was as cold as it has been the previous days. In addition to that, we got some misty rain, limiting the visibility and challenging us to find the marine mammals. But if we can’t rely on the summer this year, at least we can do so on the animals. We spotted two humpback whales in Skjálfandi Bay today. In the morning one of them was very relaxed. He took only shallow dives, spent a lot of time at the surface and didn’t move too much. However, in the afternoon this individual got much more active and started travelling north in pretty high speed. So we turned back to the other humpback, which was a bit further in the bay. And on the way we encountered a group of white beaked dolphins. It was quite a large group and they started jumping and tail slapping, when we approached them.
So all in all a great whale-watching day, even without summerly temperatures. 😉
