A warm and sunny day with amazing whales
Finally, summer is here! It has been awhile since the temperature has been above 10°C, but today has been really warm and sunny, we didn’t even have to bring out the warm overalls.
Today was a gorgeous day out on Skjálfandi Bay with plenty of whales. We headed out early morning, all eager to find some whales. Everybody was smiling, especially the crew, that had definitely had enough of the cold northern winds.
It didn’t take long until we spotted a huge spout in the northern part of the bay. There was no doubt what we had there– a Blue Whale! About an hour we spent right next to the Blue Whale, that lifted its enormous fluke for us almost every time it went for a deep dive. Occasionally a Humpback Whale, eager to get our attention, showed up on the other side of the boat.
Our second tour was just as amazing. We saw a different individual of a Blue Whale and that one was for sure not a shy one. It came up so close to the boat that we saw the entire long body right under the surface. I have never in my life seen a Blue Whale so close. We also ran into a calm Humpback Whale. That one slowly circled around the boat, so close that we could see the white flippers reflect under the clear water.
A beautiful day on Skjálfandi Bay. Let’s cross our fingers that the sun keeps shining and the whales keep feeding around here.
