Three species in sunny weather
Today we had pretty nice weather conditions here in Skjálfandi Bay with a lot of sunshine, so hopefully summer is finally arriving here in the north of Iceland.
I went on two tours on our biggest boat “Garðar” (at 10:00 and 13:30) and both tours have been really successful.
In the morning we came across a very nice and calm humpback whale that was slowly travelling alongside our boat, so we could follow it for about half an hour while the whale was right under the surface, with its long white flippers easily visible for everyone on board. On the way back to Húsavík we even found another humpback whale that was lifting its fluke really high and really close to the boat.
In the afternoon trip we even encountered three different species: First we found a nice group of white-beaked dolphins close to the coast and as we continued sailing further west, we spotted a minke whale that surfaced very close to our boat several times.
We decided to sail even further west towards the mountains and found a humpback whale (not the same individual as this morning) which showed a similar behaviour like the one we saw this morning, just drifting under the surface for a while. In the end, the whale was lifting its fluke high into the air, showing us the distinctive black and white pattern and after this “goodbye-wave” we decided to head back to Húsavík harbour.
