Surprise after the storm
The first week of June started very stormy and due to the bad weather conditions we had to cancel our tours on Monday and Tuesday. But yesterday the storm calmed down and we had the chance to go out again.
It’s always exciting to sail out after a “break”. The wind and high waves influence the feeding conditions in the bay, which again affects the occurence of the whales. So we were curious to see what’s going on in Skjálfandi Bay today.
Especially in the morning conditions were still quite challenging. The swell was high and we got the cold wind from the north – hard to believe that it’s summer in other parts of Europe… Nevertheless many brave passengers joined us on our trips. But what a surprise: They bay seemed to be pretty empty, concerning marine mammals. We spotted many different bird species, but no sign of a whale or dolphin. Our boats checked out the whole bay, sailing in different direction to cover almost the whole area. In the afternoon we finally encountered a humpback whale. However, this individual was travelling north in high speed and we didn’t find it again in the evening.
Well, that’s nature – always unpredictable!
But at least the weather forecast looks quite promising for the following days and let’s hope the whales will come back to Skjálfandi Bay pretty soon!!!
