King winter but good sailing and whale watching
Today we went out at 09:30 and 14:30 for the Whales, Puffins and Sails (NS-2) tour on our schooner Hildur. The weather was cold and with its -3 °C it felt more like January than May. But when we came to the Puffin Island we could quickly see what the Puffins thought about what season of the year it was supposed to be. While the Puffins only come to Iceland for the summer was it confirmed that it was indeed May, not December. It was already a lot of Puffins by the island but few on the Island itself, while it is still covered in snow. After a good puffin show, for both the trips, it was time for some serious sailing. Captain Hörður gave orders and up went the sails and with a good speed of 6,5 knots it was time to search for some big mammals, whales. It did not take long to locate a humpback whale, and a shy minke whale, in the middle of the Skjálfandi Bay and after a good whale watching it was time to head back home to Húsavík, on sails of course!
