Minkes, Dolphins and Humpbacks!
We had a simply fantastic tour this morning onboard “Náttfari”!
It started with a very nice and friendly minke whale that we encountered after about 30-40 minutes sailing from Húsavík harbour. The minke whale seemed to be feeding in the area, as it took only very short and shallow dives and at one occasion, it even rolled around with a big splash, feeding on its side!
After we had got some really good looks at the minke whale, we sailed further west, towards the mountains and it did not take long until we were surrounded by a big group of white-beaked dolphins!
The dolphins were everywhere! And they gave us a great show: They were jumping out of the water, approaching the boat, riding on the waves from the boat…..simply fantastic to see!
As we were searching for more animals in the north-western part of the bay, we were just about to go back to Húsavík, when we suddenly got a call from the fishing vessel “Hafborg” (they were fishing not too far away from us), that there was humpback whale breaching just in front of their boat!!!
So we went towards them and as we arrived there, we realized that there were actually two humpback whales in the area! We got some extremely close looks at one of them, before we really had to go back to the harbour.
In the afternoon we saw a group of white-beaked dolphins and a minke whale, so there was a lot of life in the bay today.
