Two tours, two humpbacks, two minkes
We had not been able to go out during the last two days due to very bad weather here in Skjálfandi Bay and it is always exciting to sail out after some days of cancellation as you never know what to expect…..
But to make it short: It has been a very successful day!
As we were heading west in the direction of the beautiful mountains, we could clearly see that they had put on their winter outfit – there was a lot of new snow on top of them, making them look very beautiful in the autumn sun.
After a little while of sailing we suddenly got a hint from one of the fishing boats in the area that they had seen two humpback whales – great news! As we sailed in their direction, it did not take us long to spot the powerful spout from one of the humpbacks. We also saw the second whale, but spend some nice time with one individual that was definitely a big humpback whale!
On one occasion, we saw the humpback lifting its majestic fluke into the air right next to our boat!
Also the afternoon was very nice. We set the course directly towards the area where we had seen the humpback whales in the morning, but in the middle of the bay we suddenly spotted a very small minke whale! What a nice surprise! We took some good looks at the minke and just a few minutes later we came across a second minke whale, this time a much bigger individual.
We also got some fantastic looks at one of the humpback whales (the same individual as in the morning) and it was just nice to see that there seems to be a lot of life here in the bay after the storm!
