Where are the whales???
After a stormy night we were curious what was awaiting us – wind from the north often brings lots of nutrients in the bay, thus increasing the availability of food which hopefully attracts some wildlife.
However, it turned out to be quite difficult to find some animals. We decided to sail in northwesterly direction to check out the northern area. But unfortunatley we didn’t come across any whales. Of course we always stay in contact with all the other boats in the area, which sailed in different directions to cover the whole bay. Surprisingly none of us was successful, the bay seemed to be empty!
Once again we got remembered that this is the wild nature – nothing we can influence or control.
In the afternoon we started searching in the southern part of Skjálfandi Bay, before we headed north along the western coast. We checked out all the areas which are known to be rich feeding grounds, but obviously not today. Finally we were running out of time and had to start heading back. But what a surprise – suddenly we spotted a black back surfacing not too far away from us: A minke whale! So finally we were successful and got some very close looks at the animal.
Also today we still got a lot of swell from the open sea, hopefully bringing in some nutrients. And hopefully, the whales will come back pretty soon!
