Summer!?
There was one thing we really didn’t need today: our cosy overalls! It was incredibly warm and when the wind calmed down and the sun made her way through the dark clouds it felt like a day in midsummer!
In the morning it didn’t take us too long to find the whales. After about half an hour we encountered three humpback whales surfacing close together, which is quite a rare sight since these animals are usually solitary. One of them suddenly started lobtailing, which was wonderful to observe. A bit further northwest we spotted a fourth humpback whale and spent some time with this individual as well, before we headed back to Húsavík harbor.
In the afternoon we encountered the three humpback whales from the morning much further north and they also split up, so we focused on one individual this time. And – lucky us – the humpback whale brached once right next to our boat! In the same area we also spotted a group of white beaked dolphins, which were jumping and bowriding, so perfect entertainers for our passengers!
And we were already about heading back to Húsavík, when we spotted a minke whale. So three species on one tour – that’s how we like it! 😉
