A fantastic day for whale watching
Today I had three tours on our smallest boat “Knörrinn” together with captain Már. We were the first boat this morning when we left the harbour at 8:30 this morning and it it always exciting to sail out early in the morning as you never know how things have changed in the bay during the night.
We started to sail north-west, into the direction of Flatey (the Flat Island) and after about 40 minutes of sailing, we spotted a minke whale. We soon figured out that there were actually at least two minke whales in the area and not far away, we also saw a big and powerful blow from a large whale – a Humpback Whale!
We took some nice looks at the Humpback Whale and on one occasion, we were waiting for the humpback to surface again as the whale suddenly came up just within metres from our boat!!!
On the way back to Húsavík we even came across a second humpback whale so our first tour was already a very good start!
But also the other two trips (at 12:00 and 16:00) have been really successful – today was just a great day for whale watching with sunshine all day long and lots of whales in the bay. On all our tours today we had seen several humpback and minke whales and on our tours in the late afternoon, we even spotted the white-beaked dolphins as well!
Fingers crossed that it will continue like this for a little while! 😉
