The sun is back! :-D
Finally the weather changed and we got excellent conditions for whale watching today: It was sunny and quite warm and the wind calmed down. After a storm it’s always exciting to go out, because the waves are mixing the water column, which might increase the availability of food and thus attract the whales!
However, there was no sign of any bigger species in the morning. The boats spread through the whole bay, scanning the area for some wildlife. In the northern part we encountered a group of white beaked dolphins. They approached the boat and started jumping just ahead of us! And on the way back, very close to the harbor, we spotted a group of harbor porpoises, which weren’t as shy as usually.
In the afternoon the bigger species came back into the bay. We decided to check out the southern part of the bay, where we observed a humpback whale, surfacing very close to the shore. And suddenly the whale breached and continued slapping with its mighty tail! Only a few minutes later we spotted another species: A minke whale coming to the surface not too far away from us. So four species in perfect weather conditions – wish every day would be like that! 😉
