Whales in the wind
The weather in Skjálfandi bay has not been at its best for the last couple of days and this morning it was still very windy and the waves were high. Because of that we unfortunately had to cancel our morning tours. Around noon the wind calmed down and we were finally able to go out! We had a lot of people waiting in lines to go out with us and they sure were in for a treat.
We headed out towards Lundey Island and the bird life there was just stunning. There were a lot of Puffins and even some Arctic Skuas chasing down Arctic Terns and Fulmars. It was obvious that there was a lot of food in the area. Later on we spotted two Minke whales. They both came up really close to the boat, obviously busy feeding.
On our afternoon tour we spotted a Minke whale again and a bit further north there were a couple of Humpback whales feeding. One of them came really close to the boat and showed off his white flippers and his fluke. Once again, on the afternoon tour, the bird life was absolutely amazing.
It was a great day, despite the wind, but the passengers were excited to experience true Icelandic weather out at sea. I do hope that the wind calms down though and the sun starts to shine again, because the whales are definitely around.
