Dolphins under the rainbow
After enjoying days of sunshine and calm sea, it was a gray Wednesday morning in Skjálfandi Bay when our boat Náttfari sailed out of Húsavík harbour.
The boat set course towards Lundey Island – the puffin colony of Skjálfandi Bay – to explore the territory for whales and bird life.
At first, passengers saw Artic Terns and Puffins in extraordinary numbers.
As the boat sailed further north, and a vivid rainbow rose from the horizon, our youngest passenger on board spotted a large dorsal fin – first one, than another and another and another …
It was clear that the boat had approached a school of White-Beaked Dolphins.
The passengers watched, and photographed, these large dolphins swim and play until the captain said it was time to return back to Húsavík.
On the steam home, the crew brought refreshments for everyone on board. Drinking the complimentary steaming hot chocolate, we were all reminded how cold Skjálfandi Bay actually was this morning.
