Whales of all sizes in excellent conditions!
Skjálfandi Bay means the shaking bay, due to earthquake activity of course. But usually we think the name’s perfect, since the sea is sometimes quite rough. Not so today. The surface was flat as a mirror and it was hard to tell the border between the sea and the sky, which gave us the impression the boats were just flying! Best conditions to spot the smallest whale species we observe in the bay: The harbor porpoises. They were in a playful mood and surfaced close to our boat, even jumping a bit.
But the highlight of the tour were two humpback whales. Also the animals were very calm. They were incredibly relaxed, not bothered by us at all and we got some very close looks at them. We saw their long white flippers shining through the surface and got an impression of the animals’ amazing size.
