A handful of Humpbacks…..
Today was just a perfect day for whale watching here in Skjálfandi Bay with very good sea conditions, a lot of sun (at least in the afternoon ;-)) and lots of whales and birds!
I went on three trips on “Náttfari” today and on our first tour (at 9:00) we encountered a minke whale and a humpback whale just within half an hour from the harbour. We took some good looks at them and as we decided to head further out to keep on searching for more, we got word from our colleagues on “Knörrinn” about more humpback whales a bit further north-west. We went there and got to see three humpback whales swimming close to each other!
We sailed back to the harbour and on our next tour (at 12:30) we took a good look at the humpback whale close to Húsavík. It was very relaxed and lifted its majestic fluke high into the air right next to our boat! In the northern part of the bay, we then encountered two of the humpback whales we saw in the morning as well as two other humpback whales that we spotted from a bit further away…..so in total we saw five humpback whales on this tour!
Also the third tour (at 17:00) was really nice with lots of feeding seabirds and a total of two humpback whales and two minke whales.
All in all, a fantastic day at sea and it is really nice to see so many birds and whales back feeding in the bay….fingers crossed it will stay like this for a little longer! 😉
