Summer holidays – time to relax not only for humans
It’s summer in Húsavík! Due to high temperatures and the glowing sun many people filled the streets and cafés and of course also our boats since there’re no better conditions for whale watching! The sea was calm and bright blue, reminding a bit of waters in the Caribbean! The sailing alone was a wonderful experience and we enjoyed the view on the beautiful scenery around Skjálfandi Bay. But when we reached the western part of the bay we spotted a humpback whale. This whale seemed to be on vacation, too: It was just logging at the surface, perhaps taking a nap. We approached it carefully to avoid disrupting the animal and we had the chance to observe the whloe body of the whale under the clear sea surface and got an idea of the actual size of the mighty whale!
For a very long time the whale simply floated next to us, before it slowly lifted the fluke and went down for a dive. We continued sailing further west. Very close to the mountains we encountered a minke whale and got some really nice looks at this species as well, before we started our journey back to the harbor. Hopefully the summer will continue like this!
