Joining a big meeting
Every day is special – once again we realized that today! The weather was very erratic. It was quite rainy and windy this morning and at midday it became very foggy. However we encountered three humpback whales. One of them surfaced close to the harbor of Húsavík, whereas the others stayed in the western part of Skjálfandi Bay. That’s where we also headed to in the afternoon, hoping the whales would still be there. Suddenly the fog cleared and – what a surprise – we spotted blows all around us! There were at least five or six humpback whales in the area. Three of them swam right next to each other, surfacing almsot synchronously. They were slowly heading north and we followed them, getting some very close looks at them. But after several minutes a fourth humpback whale approached the three individuals we were watching and suddenly it breached right next to us! Everybody was excited, what a great experience! Of course we were wondering why he showed this behavior. Was ist just for fun? Or did he intend to impress the other whales? The answer will probably remain the humpback whales’ secret…
