Calm sea and calm whales
Today conditions were simply perfect: The sea was incredibly calm and flat like a mirrow. It was quite warm and visibility was excellent – best preconditions to find the whales.
In the morning it took us some time to spot them. They were in the northwestern part of Skjálfandi Bay and interestingly despite the good conditions it was quite difficult to see them. Finally we were successful and encountered two humpback whales. They were very calm and relaxed, which was the reason why it took us some time to find them. But as soon as we approached them we all we had to do was to stop the boat and wait for them tu surface. They came very close and their breaths were clearly audible. Suddenly one of the humpback whales changed direction, came straight for us and lifted its mighty head, looking at us. What a magic moment!
In the same area suddenly a minke whale surfaced and we got some nice looks at this species as well.
During the day, more humpback whales came in tha bay, we encountered one of them close to the harbor. Once again we got the proof that conditions might change within hours and we have to be on the lookout for the animals as soon as we’re leaving the harbor. And last but not least when we headed back from the last tour in the evening, we observed in some distance a humpback whale breaching for several minutes!
