Every day is special!
The summer seems to take a break during these days – today the sky was overcast and our passengers were happy about our cosy overalls, which kept them warm when we were heading out into Skjálfandi Bay. However, the sea was very calm and visibility was good.
In the morning we encountered a Humpback whale in the western part of the bay, close to the so called “fishrock”, which is known to be a rich feeding ground for the whales. The humpback whale surfaced several times close to the boat and we had the chance to observe its feeding behavior. When we sailed a bit closer to the mountains, we observed two Minke whales surfacing in between a big flock of birds, which are usually a good indicator that there’s a lot of food available in the area.
In the afternoon we decided to sail a bit further north. We went in direction of Flatey, the “flat island” quite far in the northwestern part of the bay. And suddenly we spotted Humpback whales surfacing all around us! There were at least four or five individuals in the area. Two of them were swimming next to each other, which is quite rare to see with these solitary animals. They surface right next to our boat and suddenly of of them breached right in front of us! It jumped three more times out of the water and gave us an incredible show!
Once again we got the proof that it is always worth going out. So join us on one of our tours and we would be happy to welcome you on board!
