Blue Whales and breaching Humpbacks!
We headed out this morning in pretty rough weather, the wind was blowing from the north and it was raining. After a great day yesterday, we were hoping the Blue Whales were still around.
As we sailed north we spotted a huge spout and soon realized that it was from a Blue Whale! It came up pretty close to the boat and it even lifted its fluke for us a couple of times, but that is a pretty rare sight when it comes to the Blue Whale. After some great encounters with the Blue Whale we decided to head further north. After a little while we were in for a nice surprise when we ran into another Blue Whale! That one was even bigger then the first one and we got really great looks at it.
As we were getting ready to head back to Húsavík our captain spotted two breaching Humpback Whales not too far away from us. We headed towards them and they kept jumping for several minutes. It was truly an amzing sight to see the two of them coming up out of the water at the same time. After a little while they split up, so on the left hand side of the boat we had a tail slapping Humpback Whale and on our right hand side we had a breaching Humpback Whale. As we were enjoying the sight of the Humpbacks we noticed that a little further north of them there was a spout from the third Blue Whale of the day. We saw the back of it a couple of times far out before we headed back home.
With two breaching Humpback Whales and three Blue Whales, it really was a fantastic day and as soon as we spotted the first Blue Whale we forgot all about the rain and the wind–the hot chocolate on the way back home helped as well.
Lets cross our fingers that the Blue Whales will stay in the bay for a little longer!
