Killer whales in Skjálfandi Bay!!!
We had fantastic weather conditions when we left the harbour this morning: The sea was almost as flat as a mirror and the sun was also shining during the tour…..but also whalewise, it was a tour to remember!
It started with a very nice minke whale not far away from Húsavík. It was very relaxed and we got some really nice close-up looks at it. After having spent about half an hour with the minke whale, we decided to sail a bit further and we heard from our sailing schooner “Haukur” that they were watching a killer whale in the northern part of the bay.
We started to sail in that direction and that paid off!!! Already from some distance we could clearly see a huge black dorsal fin, belonging to a male killer whale. First it was swimming quite fast but after a few minutes, we got some fantastic looks at it, really close to the boat! And he was not alone: A bit further away, we also saw two more killer whales surfacing (at least one of them was a female, as the dorsal fin was a bit smaller).
On the way back both crew and passengers had a big smile on their face! 🙂
