Humpback whales – everywhere!!!
Due to bad weather conditions we had to cancel our tours yesterday. Fortunately the wind calmed down today, although the swell was still quite high and there was even fresh snow on top of the mountains in the western part of the bay.
The day after the storm is always exciting, because we don’t know what to expect when we sail out into Skjálfandi Bay. Usually we check out the areas where we saw the whales the day before, but since we didn’t go out yesterday we had to go for a little expedition this morning.
But our expectations were far exceeded: We spotted a blow and when we headed there, we suddenly saw surfacing whales all around us! There were at least five or six humpback whales close to us and we spotted even more further southwest. Incredible! It was hard to decide where to sail first and while we focused on one animal, two or three others surfaced all around us. Furthermore we encountered a minke whale, which joined the feeding party. Obviously the storm brought a lot of food into the bay.
It was whale watching non-stop and I’m already looking forward to tomorrow! Hopefully the big meeting continues!!! 🙂
