North Sailing receives a grant from the Ministry of Interior
North Sailing received a grant recently from the Icelandic Ministry of Interior for the project “Regenerative electric engine in a ship”. This subvention is being granted for the first time in order to support projects that aim to increase the utilization of domestic energy sources in ships and therefore decrease the usage of fossil fuels, enhance knowledge in the sector and promote research and co-operation.
The intention is to convert North Sailing’s schooner in a way that the supportive engine onboard will be electrical and the accumulator re-charged when in port or by utilizing the wind energy while sailing. As a result, the ship will be powered with great respect for the environment while, for example, showing enthusiastic passengers the incredible nature and marine wildlife Iceland has to offer.
The granting committee believes that “this project will increase the publicity and public interest towards powering ships in a environmentally friendlier manner. The experience of using electric energy to power ships will be beneficial when evaluating how and if electric energy produced domestically can replace fossil fuel in Icelandic ships to some extent.”
