The Angels of the Sea
Before we sail out into Skjálfandi Bay, I always remember the passengers that we enter the territory of the animals. So we are only the visitors and that of course means we can never influence anything. But today again we got the proof that this is also the exciting part of it, because we never know what to expect. And the whales had some surprises for us.
The sea was very calm, meaning excellent conditions to spot the whales. In the morning we saw some white beaked dolphins on our way further north-west. But the highlight was the humpback whale we encountered after that: It was very relaxed and we got some incredible looks at it, since it was just floating under the surface of the sea right next to our boat. We got the chance to look at the whole animal, including the long white flippers. Now everybody understood, why these gentle animals are sometimes called “the angels of the sea”. It was a goose bumps generating sight!
And the afternoon was even better. Again we encountered a group of white beaked dolphins, some of them were jumping! Furthermore we spotted many harbor porpoises and finally another humpback whale. This one was also very calm and suddenly it started to turn around, showing us its belly and the grooves in its throat. Several times it slapped with the flippers. Simply great! No aquarium can offer such a show!
