A good start into the last week of August
Today the weather was wonderful: Due to no wind the sea was completely flat and visibility was very good. In addition to that, it was sunny and unusual warm.
In the morning we sailed into the area where we spotted the whales yesterday, very close to the mountains in the western part of Skjálfandi Bay. A good decision, as we realized soon. We encountered several minke whales. They were busy feeding and lifted their head out of the water. One of them surfaced next to our boat!
But there were also two humpback whales in this area. One of them swam very close to the shore, just like it did yesterday.
In the afternoon we also observed some harbor porpoises. Although they are usually quite hard to observe, today they were easy to spot due to the flat sea. Furthermore we found another humpback whale further north in the middle of the bay.
Three cetacean species and late summer weather – hopefully it will stay like this for at least some days!
