Entertaining humpback whales
Once again the humpback whales, the most common species we observe in Skjálfandi Bay, were the highlights of this day. The Sunday started with warm temperatures and the sea was very flat. Like yesterday we encountered one humpback whale in the southwest of the bay. It surfaced unusual close to the shore. It was hard to approach it with our boat, since the water was very shallow. Nevertheless we were lucky to observe this humpback whale lobtailing! Further north we spotted a minke whale, which came up very close to our boat. And in the same area we saw two other humpback whales, swimming next to each other.
In the afternoon the wind picked up, now from northerly direction and the sea was quite rough. In the middle of the bay we suddenly saw some splashes: We had the chance to observe another humpback whale tailslapping and even breaching several times. It turned on its back, slapping with the long white flippers and we spend some time with this wonderful entertaining animal. Further west we encountered one more humpback whale and some harbor porpoises. Hopefully the whales remain in this breaching-mood the next days!!
