A varied day
Finally the wind calmed down and today the sea was almost as flat as a mirror. These conditions enabled us to spot the whales from a distance already.
In the morning we encountered two humpback whales in the western part of Skjálfandi Bay, surfacing close together. Both of them were very relaxed and calm, they didn’t care about our boat at all! Surprisingly we spotted these two whales again on our second tour – but this time very close to Lundey, the Puffin Island, in the eastern part of the bay; a proof how quickly these animals can move. However, this gave us the opportunity to take a closer look at all the puffins that are nesting on Lundey.
Furthermore we spotted several harbor porpoises and got some close encounters with two minke whales. In addition we encountered groups of white beaked dolphins and in late afternoon we were lucky to observe a breaching humpback whale! Whale watching can be so varied!
