Many Meetings
After the storm of the last few days we enjoyed the sun and warm temperatures today. Many tourists took the chance to join us on one of our tours and it was worth going out into the bay!
The highlight of the morning tour were three humpback whales swimming side by side. They lifted their flukes almost synchronously and surfaced very calm close to the boat. It is quite rare to see these animals accompanied by other individuals, since the humpback whales are quite solitary and usually travel alone.
In the afternoon we encountered among others two minke whales. And also these two behaved different than usual – also they surfaced very close to each other.
Indeed it seemed to be the day of many meetings: In the evening we spotted some white beaked dolphins. When we approached them we realized that it was an unbelievable big group of them. I guess more than hundred dolphins surfaced all around us and they were leaping out of the water, which was an incredible sight. We just decided to turn the boat and start to head back to Húsavík, when suddenly one of the humpback whales started breaching right in front of us. It was jumping completely out of the water! There’s no better way to end a day! 😀
