Summer break
Obviously, the Icelandic summer has taken a break. Today it was very windy and rainy and our whale watching tours were quite adventurous: The pretty high waves made it difficult to find the whales. Nevertheless, thanks to our manoeuvrable boats and experienced crew the tours were very successful.
We encountered several groups of white beaked dolphins. Some of them were busy feeding, surrounded by hundreds of arctic terns. We watched the dolphins leaping out of the water, which is a strategy to hunt the fish.
And suddenly we spotted a blow – definitely from a bigger whale! We approached it and to our surprise we saw even more of them. There were at least four humpback whales around us! We were lucky to get some close encounters with two of them.
Also the bird life was very interesting: At the moment you can see many young arcitc turns making their first attempts at flight and we were fortunate to see a gannet flying by close to the boat.
Finally, on the way back the delicious hot chocolate was good to warm up again. ;-)
