Four species, a feeding party and a breaching humpback!!! :-D
In contrast to the weather forecast the day started foggy and quite cold. However, the fog was limited to higher atmospheric layers and didn’t reach the water surface. Consequently visibility was still very good. The sea was calm and we were able to spot the whales from a long distance.
First we encountered a group of white beaked dolphins which approached playfully our boat. And then a humpback whale surfaced close to them and we also spotted some harbor porpoises. Three species on one tour – very great! And suddenly another humpback whale in some distance was jumping out of the water!!!!!
The afternoon was even more exciting! We sailed further west close to the mountains and we just ran into a feeding party! Between hundreds of birds six or seven humpback whales, many white beaked dolphins and several minke whales were busy feeding! The whales surfaced all around us. It was hard to decide where to look first and we got some very close encounters with the whales. On our way back to Húsavík the fog cleared and released the view of the beautiful mountains in the west. When we entered the harbor, the summer was back in Húsavík!
All in all – a perfect day!!! 😀
