A day of superlatives
Today was certainly one of the warmest days we’ve had this summer so far. The sea was flat like a mirror – meaning perfect whale watching conditions for us!
In the morning we encountered several humpback whales. One of them seemed to be resting: It was very calm and stayed on the surface for a long time. But then we spotted something even bigger: The largest animal that ever lived on earth – a blue whale!!!!! Already the blow of these whales is impressive, reaching up to 12 meters! But that’s nothing compared to the incredible sight of the huge animal! It seems as if the bluish-gray back is never ending when the whale surfaces for breathing. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, because usually you only see about a third of the total body! Finally we were lucky to observe a minke whale, before we headed back to Húsavík.
In the afternoon we encountered two humpback whales. But suddenly we were surrounded by an unusual large group of white beaked dolphins. They accompanied us almost the entire tour and we saw them jumping and bow riding, which was a very great sight! And last but not least we observed another blue whale. This individual showed a rather unusual behavior: It was lifting the mighty fluke every time it went down for a deep dive. To experience so many rare events in a day, is just amazing!!!
