Breaching whales and a detour to Lundey
The sea was very calm this morning when we sailed out to search for the whales. But finding them was not difficult at all! The quite rough sea conditions during the last days apparently brought a lot of food in the bay, followed by the whales. We spotted several blows in the western part of Skjálfandi Bay, close to the mountains. But also in northerly direction we saw at least three humpback whales surfacing. We decided to focus on them and got some really nice looks on two individuals. One of them stayed close to Lundey, the Puffin Island. Hence we could take a closer look on the countless puffins flying around the island and sitting on the sea surface, before we set the course back to Húsavík.
Also the afternoon tour offered unforgettable moments: This time we focused on the humpback whales that occurred further west. And we were lucky to see two of them breaching! It was amazing to observe these massive animals jumping out of the water! One of them continued flapping with the flippers and was even swimming on its back! What a great experience!!!
