Athletic whales
On land, today the National Day was celebrated. At sea, the whales celebrated Sports Day! We left the harbor in summer weather conditions and sailed straight westward. Suddenly we noticed some splashes in front of us: A large group of white beaked dolphins was about to do some morning exercises! They jumped out of the water like crazy! Already watching them was fun!
But then we focused on some humpback whales. We approached one of them and observed it busy feeding. But suddenly the whale changed its behavior! It turned upside down and started slapping with its mighty fluke! It was an impressive sight and of course we could also clearly hear the noisy bangs, when the tail hit the water surface. And the show went on. The humpback whale approached our boat. He dived under the boat and started to examine it calmly. We held our breath when the huge animal lay right next to the boat on the side, watching us.
It is an indescribable experience to get so close to these giants!
Also the afternoon was very successful. We observed not only humpback whales but also at least three minke whales busy feeding.
That’s the exciting thing about the wild nature: You never know what to expect!
