Breaching minke whale
Today again several surprises were awaiting us.
On the first tour we met already three humpback whales on our way into the western part of Skjálfandi Bay. Later we saw more of them, also two minke whales and a small group of harbor porpoises close to the boat. When we turned the boat to start sailing back to Húsavík, we suddenly spotted several splashes in some distance – a jumping whale! Indeed, there was a MINKE WHALE BREACHING in front of us! It is quite rare to see this species jumping out of the water!
Also the afternoon was very successful. We hardly left Húsavík harbor, when we met the first humpback whale close to the shore. And in the western part of the bay the feeding party was going on. Not only humpback whales, but also minke whales surfaced close to our boat with the mouth full of water and prey. We got some nice looks on their pink shining skin because of their expanded grooves within the throat, which you can see when they take a mouth full of water for feeding. And suddenly a group of white beaked dolphins surrounded our boat and we were lucky to see them even jumping and bow riding.
Again, it was a successful and exciting day!!!
