Orcas and a feeding party
Today not only the weather provided perfect whale watching conditions! The bay was full of life and sometimes it was hard to decide where to go first. In the western part of the bay, close to the mountains, a big feeding party took place. Surrounded by hundreds of birds we saw at least five humpback whales and several minke whales. On our morning tour, one of the humpback whales was even resting and when we approached it slowly we had the chance to get a very close look on the whale that drifted calm on the surface. Furthermore we encountered a group of very playful white beaked dolphins and some harbor porpoises on the second tour.
But the biggest surprise was waiting for us on the 5 o’ clock tour: Suddenly we spotted several high black triangular dorsal fins. Indeed – we were lucky to get the rare opportunity to observe a group of orcas, surfacing close to our boat! What a great experience! And in the western part of Skjálfandi Bay the dinner party went on. About seven humpback whales and a lot of minke whales were busy feeding and gave us an impressive show.
