Breaching Humpback next to the schooner!
Today we went out for the first time this season with our Captain Hreiðar onboard “Bjössi Sör” and as we left the harbour, we set the course to the mountains on the western side of the bay, where most of the whales had been the last couple of days.
It didn’t take long until we spotted several minke whales close to the old farmhouse in Naustavík. We spent some time with the minke whales, but a few minutes later our sailing schooner “Hildur” called us and told us about a breaching humpback whale!!!!!
We left the minkes and headed out towards the schooner (and the humpback). It was quite far out in the north-western part of the bay and as we arrived there, the humpback had unfortunately stopped his jumping activities. But even though the whale didn’t breach for us, it was really nice to take a few looks at the humpback whale (lifting its fluke a few times for us), before we had to head back to Húsavík.
